Her expression hardened.
“Your father was supposed to love your mother forever.”
“He does.”
“No.”
Julia’s voice rose.
“He replaced her.”
“He spent twelve years alone.”
“And that makes this acceptable?”
“Yes.”
The answer came without hesitation.
“He is alive.”
“Your mother gave him everything.”
“And he loved her.”
“Then he should not be smiling at strangers as though she never existed.”
Anger moved through my grief.
“He is not erasing her by having dinner.”
